We are living in a different world.
Although there are no formal authorised announcements confirming this was a bomb, we have multiple "off-the-record" comments from different countries and we also have (formally approved) bans on travel. This is highly unlikely without a high degree of confidence this was the result of a bomb.
It appears one source of information was a heat signature detected from a US satellite. Most likely SBIRS, which is claimed to scan the earths surface once every 10 seconds.

It is likely that SBIRS played a part in MH17 analysis.
Although we have yet to find MH370, it is notable that satellite data (albeit a different type of satellite) provided the first clue MH370 was more than a simple technical problem but instead was something more complex. It was the Inmarsat data that prompted Malaysia to confirm the plane had turned back - even though Malaysia was apparently aware of this but inexplicably continued to search in the South China Sea. SBIRS apparently contributed information to the MH370 analysis, although no further information is available beyond the comment "providing technical data to the intelligence community."
