Why would it have to crash?
Why not have it scan the ground in front and around to the sides in search of the most suitable landing area.
This technology is already in existence and operating. This is not pie in the sky.

Incidentally, Sully was an exceptional pilot. Just because one human did well does not mean that usually the pilots don't crash in in these scenarios.
The reason we know his name is because he is the very rare human who got this right, not the norm.
