The folly has to do with McNamara trying to force a "one size fits all" into being, which he did, and then the USAF putting their heads together and figuring out what to do with this beast .... which they did, good on 'em! Navy, upon whom this beast was being force fed, was able to push back because
it didn't meet mission requirements. F-14 later did.
@ Turbine D: you post makes a lot of sense, in terms of the imbedded program problems.
