The BA fleet does seem to have got to the size where a spare/maintenance aircraft is needed. I get the impression that BA used to do a lot of chartering in from Titan etc to cover unserviceabilities, but now seem to go for cancellations on the higher frequency routes instead, just shuffling passengers and aircraft around.
