Taiwan: Tropical weather, clean and safe. People, even in the interview process, are very friendly and polite, most people under 40 will speak english, if not, they will get someone who does, always willing to help, specially to foreigns.

Arrival and accommodation: Standard, clear customs, get luggage, exchange money and take a taxi. Arrive to EVA compound, get your badge, go to daily counter in operations building 2nd floor, introduce yourself, retrieve room key and confirm interview process schedule and places and go to your room,
7-11 store inside the EVA compound.

Dress code: Formal Suit for day 1 and 2, use gym clothes for the medical.

DAY 1: Written Test and Simulator

Written test: 50 questions, 60 minutes, passing mark 80%. Scores will be given within 3 minutes, should a candidate fail the exam, a second exam will be given with the same passing mark. Some questions ask you what statement is NOT true, so read the question carefully and check those units (feet, meters, Celsius, Fahrenheit, SM, NM).

Reference Subject Areas, a candidate should AT LEAST review this information, additional information will be beneficial for updated written exams and panel interview questions:

-Aerodynamics: Sweptback wing, lift formula, dutch roll and yaw damper, critical mach, mach tuck, flights above VMO/MMO, IAS/TAS/Mach relationship, use of stab trim, C.G. position pro's and con's.

-Navigation: LAT and LONG nav (1 degree – 60nm etc), figures of HSI to find out which aircraft you are (FAA ATP), MEA, MOCA, MORA, MSA, Jepp Charts symbols, localizer and glide slope coverage zones and beamwidth, holding speeds, Magnetic north, true north, magnetic deviation, magnetic variation, navigation wind triangle, rhumb line, great circle line, Dot deviations on HSI 1-60-1 rule. DME measurement, ILS/VOR/ADF frequency ranges, Speeds LRC, MRC, max endurance spd, max crz spd, rate of descent on a 3deg glide slope and effect of hadwind or tailwind.

-Weather: Wind shear, Hi Alt Sig WX Prog Charts and symbols, winds aloft chart, RVR values and trends, TAF, Metar (International METAR - TAF decoding) NOSIG, CAVOK, CLR, SKC, TX/TN, PROB, TREND, BECMG, TEMPO, fronts, jet stream, Definitions of fog, haze, mist, ceiling oktas, tropopause and troposphere, cloud bases, ceilings, vertical visibiLity, conversion from wind speed in meters/second to knots.

-Performance: Take off Segments, approach segments, stabilized appch criteria and limits for ILS/VOR/ADF, missed appch procedures, definitions of speeds like V1,Vr,V2,Vs,Vx,Vy,Vmcg,Vbe, stopway, clearways, TODA, TORA, ASDA, TOR, Wet runway and speeds, derate and assumed temp takeoff, TAT and OAT relationship, ice accretion, critical engine with crosswinds.

-General: RAT, TRU, Inverter, standard electrical system DC/AC, standard pressurization and differential, MEL, ADC, IRS, accelerometer laser gyros, QNH, QNE, QFE, antiskid system, PITOT-STATIC system from high to low pressure and temp, APU, TCAS, transponder codes, transponder modes and what they do and indicate, ELT, hydraulic system, RNP requirements and ops, RVSM (max altitude differences, aircraft requirements and contingencies).

Simulator: 45 mins aprox. on B744 full flight. You will be given a 30 minute briefing about speeds, controls, displays and handling characteristics. Questions in the briefing and in flight are allowed. Tolerances are given in the EVA simulator study guide, if outside of tolerances, you will be given a callout by the captain in the left seat to which you should answer “correcting” and try to fix it as soon as possible. If unstable, go around, you will be vectored or repositioned after the procedure. Always ask for normal checklists and if Boeing rated or experienced, try to stick to the flight technique as much as possible. No hidden tricks.

All engine take off and climb with autothrottle, clean up, level at 5000ft at 280kt or as required. Disconnect autothrottle and start steep turns of 30 and 45 degree either side. Climbs and descents of 1000 ft/min with constant speed. Reposition, VMC all engine visual approach with ILS guidance available, land. Reposition, IMC all engine ILS approach, land. Reposition, Take off, V1, outboard engine flameout, control, rotate, clean up, checklists. Reposition, IMC one engine out ILS approach, land.

No technical questions, debriefing or feedback, just go to your room and wait for HR call.

DAY 2: Group and individual interview and English test

Panel interview: 4 HR persons, at least 1 of them is a pilot. Group interview, random technical or non technical subject and each candidate talks for 2 minutes, after all candidates are finished, one selected candidate will ask another one about his/her answer and must talk for another 2 minutes. After all are finished, all candidates leave the room and get called one by one for an individual interview. Random technical questions, i.e. CAT 1 minima, instrument approaches, RVSM, jepp chart symbols, RNP, cold weather. Incident or accident records, procedures performed, previous experience and the already famous question “why do you want to join EVA Air?” or some variation for the question.

English test: Random non technical talk for 10-15 mins with a HR person to a microphone, they want to know if you can understand and be understood.

DAY 3 & 4: Medical exams

No food allowed since 10pm the night before and just small sips of water. Make sure to bring your passport and at least 2 pictures. Transportation granted only to the medical, supposedly there is an EVA transportation from downtown Taipei to the EVA compound but not confirmed.

Weight, height, BMI, pressure, blood test, urine sample, breakfast, another blood test, eye tests (Ishihara, cornea, eyeball pressure and 3 or 4 more), treadmill for 10-15 mins with heart monitor while walking and light jogging with light incline, ear test with different tones, EEG with strobes and hyperventilation, eye-brain movement coordination, dental x-ray, chest and spine x-rays, general gut test with an echography and a 240 question psychological test, in general thorough but not hard.

If you need corrective lenses make sure you bring them. If you have undergone any type of surgery bring the necessary paperwork. Not likely to be able to finish the medical on one day. Results will be ready after 1 month but nurses or doctors will be able to tell you if you are fine or if there is something wrong.
