Not an expert but to my eye looks like power failure going up to the vertical even as or before the flares are dumped. (The other Heli appears to pass him in the climb. It might just be the camera strobing but it also looks like bits are missing from the tail rotor.
Good attempt at recovery but a very sad outcome.
