For basic VFR dead-reckoning I use double and half. BEagle's standard closing angle approach (
here) seems sensible too, but i've never really used it. Using the Whizzwheel in flight seems like a really bad idea.
Of course, now i've got a PPL I use fancy things like RBIs, VORs and GPS to help, but....
