it was a mod. introduced early on in the A330 career, mid. 90s if I remember correctly. The aim being to reduce fatigue life on the airframe. It came in with the increased gross weight versions which started to do much longer ie. 8hrs + sectors.
Isn't that good for passengers as well? (having just taken a 14 hr flight on an A330)
