Tried googling your original problem and a suggestion is

ctrl-alt-f1

Which should take you into terminal.

Then

sudo apt-get install gnome shell and press enter.

Several posts mention your problem and, from reading them, most people give up and reinstall mint.

It has not happened to me, so far!!!
