I don't know why you don't just use Skype instead?
Doesn't suprise me in the least that one of Apple's godawful online services doesn't work - this is the third try (.mac, MobileMe, and now iCloud).
(as usual, when Apple fail miserably, MS has to step in to do the job properly e.g. iWork (Office), iChat (MSN), etc.)
