I think in this instance easyJet were able to advise pax of the delay at check-in/bag drop so they won't have been trapped in departures and the check-in counters were kept open until one hour before the revised departure time for that flight. As it wasn't a 'rolling delay' it gave an opportunity to visit the 'delights' of Southend-on-Sea by hopping on the train.
