While many operators actively discourage their pilots from manual flying on line even in good weather, there are others who have absolutely no problem with the practice. I refer to anecdotal reports where even the switching off of the flight director when not in active use is practically a mortal sin.

However, truth to tell, where operators do allow their crews to use their discretion in practice at manual flying, very few pilots take the opportunity simply because they cannot be bothered. A favourite excuse is a perceived workload increase on the PM. That excuse is pure tosh and they know it.

One result of this complacent attitude is that lazy captains are jerked into life if the co-pilot wants to have a fly manually, and get all uptight and apprehensive even in VMC and the sun is shining brightly. In many cases, it may not necessarily be a company policy to discourage hand flying en-route, but more often the un-helpful attitude of individual captains.

Keen and enthusiastic copilots should be encouraged to hand fly in order to keep their skills honed ready for their promotion to a captain.
