A rough running engine. Why would you land on the shortest runway with possible downwind. Surely a close low level circuit to the duty runway would have been more appropriate. If oil pressure or manifold pressure were dropping then you would possibly expect imminent engine failure. Easy for those not in the situation but there is no substitute for experience.
