I think the Co pilots demise with the nose wheel trick was more to do with the rotatable hub caps
ISTR we put our names around the hub cap and the one at the bottom bought a round of drinks. As the GE, when the challenge was on, it was usually my job to rotate the Co to the bottom, as I could not be seen from the Flt Deck, and the often suspicious Co. The ALM was also often required to remain in view until the Co got to check the losing name. You are correct, it was often his own.
