it has nothing to do with MCP settings, they get that already from your mode S transponder before. The reason for 1000 is that it links your FlightID set in the FMS to your flight plan in the system, instead of correlating with the mode A code set before. So your previously assigned squawkcode is now available to be given to someone else.
