I've got a funny feeling that Southend Airport is pretty much going to turn into a Seasonal Airport, with lots of great family holiday destinations, short weekend destinations and cater less for out of season routes (apart from AMS which is insanely popular and busy all year round). The airport will be quieter in the winter months, but if they just recruit seasonal staff on 6 month contracts then they will not be obliged to employ full timers. EZY had its first PMI flight of the year this morning, and the airport should have its brand new restaurant and bar open very shortly!
