I have landed at SM 2-3 times, and the answer is very much yes. I can understand, to a degree, the comments on Upavon and Halton. But helping SM makes real sense. There is already a great atmosphere in the buildings that have been restored. The whole site retains a rural feel.
But most importantly, it is all under the driving vision of Russell Savory, who is a highly motivated, energetic and inspirational character.
No doubt helping his success in accessing public funding, he very much sees SM as being an educational resource for schoolchildren of the region - not just for military history, but for wildlife (he is a very knowledgable twitcher and conservationist), and the site has amazing flora and fauna.
I don't begrudge him his succcess in getting some of Osborne's handouts (and with the HLF) one jot. It will become an even better place to land and visit.
