The Engine air filter you speak of is made by the Pall corporation. Their web site is:

The 206 Particle Separator uses engine bleed air to expell the heavy particles as they enter the swirl tubes.
If you plan on using this type of filter on a non turbine engine application then you will need a source of high pressure air in order to make the filter operational.
