Surely 30 seconds spent landing somewhere survivable is a better solution
I think you are splitting hairs there! The point is, the nature of the malfunction may be such that if you remain airborne nobody will survive the impending catastrophic failure that's on its way. Here's a good example (although they were lucky there was a suitable landing place)
