Indeed. After a few recent years of profit and long haul expansion, people forget how vulnerable EI is. They have barely broken even since floatation. Filling the broken pension pot will suck out another couple of hundred million. A new fleet needs to be financed in the next few years. The risk to the company's future is reflected in the share price which was in terminal decline until IAG showed up, and will go back there rapidly if the deal fails. But the parochial mentality mentioned in the article is alive and well and the politicians and unions will continue to kick it around as they always have, serving their own self interest.
