Although it won't help recover any files, if you're interested there are plenty of tools that will report the SMART status of your drive:
this is one example. It will show you the drive's own log of disk performance and errors. It's a reputable source. The manufacturer of your drive will probably have a similar free tool available. It's a bit more info that Windows doesn't pass on to the user (or, indeed, act on itself until it's too late).
