Of course every skipper is free to run his pre-flight as he wishes, but personally I do the minimum required for safe flight to free up my mental capacity and avoid any distractions.
I don't the see the point on working out non-normal configs before take-off. If something happens and it's not time-critical you have the time to work it all out in the air.
If it's time-critical dire-circumstances stuff then you're committed to landing straight away whether you have the performance to stop or not. Simples.
I quite often hear in the briefing - " If it's an uncontrollable fire and immediate return to land we can stop using the full length of the runway using idle reverse and autobrake xxx and not overheat the brakes blah blah blah "
Must be something that's being misconstrued from the PPCs.
I simply don't have a big enough brain to overcomplicate our already comprehensive procedure list.
