Don't remember bitumenised hessian in my day; if we'd had any it would be more useful for
basha roofs (palm leaf thatch could harbour all sorts of insects of huge size and horrendous aspect which dropped on you from time to time). PSP was bad enough for Aircraft Movement Areas.
Somewhere have told the story of tarred sand
