Here is a historical perspective on Carrier Aircraft (in USN) and their trials: youse can work out where it came from.... and my fave deck landing feat of all time (so far) would be the venerable Sea Vampire flown by the venerable Eric 'Winkle' Brown. Anyone who has flown the Vamp would know perhaps (if they later were deck landers) what an achievement that was at that time. And a factoid about the TOOM....
