Maybe you were thinking of the SPRS (Southern Peninsular Rescue Service) Bell Longranger which went in whilst doing some training, off Portsea?
I think you'll find it was a Jetranger, that was later replaced by the Longranger and if I had to guess i would say it was very late 80's maybe early 90s.
