To be fair, as far as mainstream media outlets go, The Grauniad is fairly trustworthy - but the only time the term "pilot error" comes up is in one quote (emphasis mine):

If you read between the lines, what this actually means is that neither the NTSB nor VG are currently commenting on the causes of the accident, so the journalist has called up a former VG bigwig for a comment
in lieu of anything official.
