Supposedly the added nitrogen from the explosives increases the poppy "yield", or so I'm told. Breaking the soil up certainly doesn't hurt.
My great uncle, in the Scots Guards, fell near the Belgian border 9/27/18. Poppies never really caught on over here, but the "lost generation" isn't quite forgotten - not yet.
