Is your laptop a recent one with Intel's Speedstep processor ??
My Toshiba 4010 (which my IT Dept kindly wiped XP off and stuck 98Se on
) did the same thing. I could watch the clock miss about one in every 4 seconds. I turned off ALL the speedstep power saving in the setup I could find and haven't had the problem since.
