I don't have iOS8 on my old iPhone but under
Settings --> iTunes & App Store --> (Scroll down) there are checkboxes for Automatic Downloads (on mine we have Music, Apps, Books, Updates).
I see that it refers to 'new purchases' but 'updates' aren't purchases ???
Perhaps this is gone in 8 ...
