If the weather is OK I'd plan overhead Melbourne then direct Albury @7500. Keep in mind you probably won't overfly Melbourne, just accept the tracking that you are given. If you are unfamiliar with the area why muck around with VFR reporting points? Or navigating the Kilmore gap? Much easier to get high and get going!
PS: and don't be afraid to use the phrase "require......due weather" if conditions dictate.
