It's not as if the RR engines are inferior to GE.
Well at least in economy terms, they were certainly inferior (if only slightly) at the time of selection, and after all economy is what most airlines base their engine choice on. No major engine manufacturer is "inferior" when it comes to reliability these days and all new units have a few issues, regardless of which decal is on the cowling.
