I don't see what the big deal is. If you need an ATPL to fly the aircraft you're flying, then your employer should spot the bill for the sim or, as mentioned, include it on a normal proficiency check. If you don't need an ATPL, then get your theory done (which lasts forever) and worry about the licence when your company needs you to.
Id be surprised if airline recruiters won't be made aware of this in the future, and consequently, we should see 2-crew job requirements drop down to CPL with ATPL Theory.
