I do have a sense of perspective. In order for SOU to significantly expand the runway needs extending. Under the Section 106 Agreement that dear old BAA signed up to in order to smooth the path of the airport re-development, the runway can never be extended beyond 2000 metres and scheduled night flights between about 2300-0600 are limited to 10 per month.

To achieve a 2000 metre runway, or anything significant near to that, the rail yards north of the runway needs purchasing and flattening, plus a significant number of houses in Campbell Road (which runs across the runway 20 undershoot) need purchasing and flattening. Added to the shortage of A320/B737-800 parking space (add the Post Office Building to the shopping list?), where can the apron parking be extended?

A grandiose plan was hatched by BAA to build a second terminal in the north-east corner, well away from all the transport links. Such a building would have major problems, apart from duplication of resources, provision of utility services and last but not least, access. The latter would either need a tunnel under the extended runway, or access road around the north side in the vicinity of Campbell Road.

We are back to the bottom line, how much profit would SOU generate for a new owner without major runway work? Secondly what would (if indeed possible) it cost to secure the additional land for runway and apron development? What is the site worth for non-aviation development?

Time will tell.
