THY is not really an expat contract. No housing, schooling, or big $, Euro payday.
It is however a very dynamic, rewarding and low stress long haul operation that is a serious alternative to the operators in the Gulf ( most beneficial for European pilots).
The politics of the airline to not really allow for foreign first officers to get ahead at this stage but a few are taking the gamble.
The 8 to 10 day block off really works well and rest days in Istanbul are far less confronting than Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mumbai. It is only long haul! maybe 3 or 4 turnarounds a year and overtime after 70 hours! No factoring of hours and no restrictions on your days off.
You need to know your ****! Support on the flight deck is non existent from the company. However the aircraft are excellent, fitted out with EFB's and the latest mods. The First Officers have been of a very high standard in line with their experience and the overall cockpit experience is professional and polite.
If you have previously worked outside your own national carrier or enjoy a challenge with not every answer in the book ? It could be a position worth considering.
THY B777 captains who I know who have returned to the gulf have done so due financial security for their families. They have found the same issues of fatigue, lifestyle and micro management unchanged.
