I get what you mean about how icadets may have to live with a certain stigma. However that does not mean they are bad pilots. What's the difference between a pilot who had to pay his way through training compared to someone who was sponsored by an airline. The former commands more respect than the latter but other than that I can't see why an icadet can't be just as good as a pilot who trained him/herself.
