In simple terms, the VDP is the point at which you will reach the MDA if you fly a CDA from the FAF to the TCH at the threshold.

When the VDP was "invented", it was advisory only. It has evolved in the regulations, however, so that now you may not descend below the MDA until reaching the VDP defined DME (at least according to the US FAA).
