Mrs. ExS was told to remove her passport hanging around her neck in one of those canvas pouches sold precisely for that purpose, because " It constitutes a third piece of hand baggage" which is forbidden - she had her cabin bag and not-very-big purse. ( for once ! )
I told her to place it in the bottom of her cabin bag, and take 5 or 6 minutes retrieving it and replacing it every time it was demanded. This held up the queue nicely.
Should I care ? Tough.
