Bergamo is a useful airport for accessing the north of Italy, for Milan it's arguably as good as Malpensa, certainly not a lot worse. For accessing the lakes and places such as Venice it is undoubtedly better situated, assuming you are hiring a car. There seems to be a lot if big multi-nationals in the area, my last flight from BGY had a dozen or so businessmen with JCB logos on their jackets and bags.
Sadly, there is no news from the airport in recent times for new routes or increased frequencies. Looks like the status quo will continue for now.
