MALM Mick Anderson MBE

As sadly posted above, Mick Anderson passed away and is at peace. After spending some time on Britannias as an Air Quartermaster he found his true vocation as a Winchman on Whirlwinds, Wessex and Sea King helicopters. Mick was a very quietly spoken, self effacing Scot who could normally be found behind a cloud of pipe smoke dispensing words of wisdom from his vast knowledge of things search and rescue. He received the MBE for his initial work in advancing the level of medical knowledge for Winchmen, the results of which can be seen today in the current expertise of winchmen qualified as NHS Paramedics. Mick was also responsible for virtually inventing Frac Straps ( lengths of tape with velcro ends ) used for strapping injured limbs etc and for introducing the Hi Line to RAF SAR. As if the rigours of a Winchman weren't enough excitement Mick was also a very competent Mountain Rescue team member and spent most of his free time in the hills that he loved so much. He was also able to pass on his vast experience during his time as an Assistant Controller at the ARCC when his local knowledge of many locations enabled very speedy responses to emergency situations. The other love of his life was his classic Morgan sports car which was much admired and envied.
RIP Mick, you will be missed by many and remembered fondly.
