It was "interesting" aboard that night.
I was in my shop - 64D (FLIR IMA), which on Ranger was located in the starboard sponson overhang between #3 & #4 elevators - and they had this playing live on the ship's TV system.
And yes, Capt. McNally was with VMA(AW)-121 Green Knights, as was I (hence my board name).
The main gear had a failure to extend.
The aircraft still airborne diverted to NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii (as the airfield at Midway Island was closed for the night). As Ranger was on her way to Korea & Japan, the next day the aircraft caught up by staging through Midway Island (Ranger was ~300nm north of Midway).
And here is a "short" version - with loads of commentary from my squadron-mates (and ship-mates).

And then in October the same year, in the Indian Ocean we had another of -121's Intruders break off the starboard main wheel on an over-hard landing - so another barrier landing - but without the yaw after contact.
You can see the wheel follow the aircraft off the end of the angle.

I've seen a better copy of that on Youtube, but can't find it now.
