'Raz' was very lucky. 603 were sent down to Hornchurch to relieve 74 Squadron on the 25 of August and went straight into combat. By the 25th of September fifteen of the twenty four original pilots were dead and two more very seriously injured.
Only 'Raz', 'Stap Me' Stapleton, Brian Carbury and George Denholm survived the war.
