Its not a question of erasing.
The CVR records a 2 hour loop, if there is a reportable incident it must be disconnected and tagged for removal on landing.
If it is not disconnected it will overwrite the important recordings.
Disconnecting the CVR is a non-standard item performed ONLY when there is a reportable incident so it can easily be overlooked in the general confusion which follows an incident.
