Superfreighter

My first flight was in a Bristol Superfreighter, 1966, going for first family holiday abroad from Lydd to Le Touquet. I was eight. I remember it as well as if it was yesterday - the vibration, the sight of the waves in the sea as we flew over the Channel, and the speed. I also remember being quite struck by how tatty the interior of the aircraft was, and the terminal at Lydd.

My family used the Lydd-Le Touquet service regularly. Once my father was the sole passenger, travelling alone with his car. The service was rather like Concorde. It was faster and more efficient than any of the modern equivalents.

It's strange to think that probably forty years later that I was able to fly in to both Le Touquet and Lydd, on separate occasions. And the last Bristol Superfreighter I saw was in small pieces behind a hangar at Enstone.
