Couldn't agree more. Solenoids don't just start smoking 'cos they're bored or want to look like James Dean. Either it's got an internal short of some kind, or too many volts for too long have been applied. Either way, you wouldn't just replace it and carry on - it'd be like replacing a fuse in your house mains distribution without checking why it had failed.
Given the choice of going ahead with a flight where something had improperly combusted but the cause was not fully explored, or waiting for a replacement a/c, I know which one I'd go for...
