We took the water bus too, and it is lovely, but I soooo wish it has been a taxi
The water bus is a great way to get around and sight-seeing too and I think there was an multi-day ticket available.
If the gondola is too expensive there is a shuttle gondola service from the market to the other side of the water which ticks the box for a few Lira (or modern equivalent).
