Take a look at a merlin or griffon engine, these engines were optimized for power, they have simple stub exhausts
While they may look "simple" in fact a lot of research and test flying went into optimising the design of the stubs to extract as much jet thrust as possible. As you say, optimised for power, but "simple" they weren't.
