I'm not sure it says specifically anywhere that you can do it this way, it just doesn't say anywhere that you can't, which amounts to the same thing. It's certainly the way it has always been done where possible, and the layout of all the application forms suggest that's the way it's expected.

I've never heard of a specified minimum duration for any flight test, except that the test must be of sufficient duration to have credibly covered the test items.
