Trying not to make the story fit the facts.
Making the story fit the facts is exactly what you're supposed to do! As opposed to:
- Making up the facts to fit the story, or
- Not caring one jot whether the story and the facts bear any resemblance to each other at all.
Unfortunately, both those approaches have been demonstrated
ad nauseum on almost every page of this thread...
