I've had a few flying jobs here and there.
Two of them were because I answered the telephone when the relevant CP was going down his short list. If his call hadn't been answered the CP would just have hung up and worked his way on down the list. In each case, I made myself immediately and at that very moment available for an interview. In each of those instances I got the job. One was in Africa and one was in Europe.
What this means to you is that you are always contactable.
You answer all calls because there'll only be the one.
You are on call 24/7.
You do not drink alcohol.
You always have a night stop bag packed and a passport handy.

So go and knock on the doors but once you've let slip your CV just make sure that you really are available for the call that will in reality probably never come.
