I don't see what all the fuss is about, $252Million, that's less than the price of a single A380...

But in all seriousness, let's have a good look, ALLLLL of a sudden they have decided to become more efficient? Really? Why haven't you been aiming to be more efficient for the last few years? What tools!!

Least we now know what the extra type being retired is, the 747 Non-reconfigured, they put the 2 types of 747s in seperately!

Oh, so you're going to suspend growth of Jetstar Asia? What on earth happened?! You've spent so long telling us how incredible these businesses would be and how much they would contribute to the Group... we'd have a lot more respect for this tool if he just came out and said "Ooops, we messed up, but we are going to fix it"

Yes, you want to retire those old gas guzzlers...oh but we're going to defer the new 787s which could actually save us a giant chunk of money in the long run... maybe we should have put them with Qantas and better utilised them?!

5000 jobs reduced ey? Well, whilst no one wants to see people sacked I don't many of us could disagree that the 1500 from Management and Non-Operational is probably a good place to start.

I don't think anyone can disagree that a leaner, meaner business is better for the majority in the long run, it's a shame that it's gotten to a position where it has apparently become bloated to the point of 15% of it's jobs being able to be made redundant. Once again though that allllll comes down to Management, they are the ones who have sat atop their ivory perch for so long and watched it all and done so little, they could have spent the last few years working on these efficiencies and doing it little by little but instead they were so focussed on their little escapades in Asia that they lost sight of the core business and now the Qantas Group all have to suffer in one fell swoop. Not mention everyone else in Aviation below, this will have knock-on effects that will be felt for years to come in terms of people moving up the Aviation ladder, everyone from Pilots and Engineers to Check-in Staff and Baggage Handlers, of course the corporate types will probably just shift industry, same job different industry, no problems for them.

And of course, no acknowledgement from those on the ivory perch for their part in it all, they've done an amaaaaazzzing job of course, it's everyone and and everything else that let them down...
